A new image every 10 minutes. Himawari-9 watches Australia continuously from a fixed point in space, so major fires can be followed as they develop, day and night.
Built for major fires. Its fire-sensitive infrared pixels are about 2 km across (larger further south), so it picks up large, hot fires — including some non-bushfire heat sources such as industrial sites. Small or low-intensity fires, and fires under thick cloud, may not be detected.
Most fire-mapping satellites pass over a given place only about twice a day.
Each image appears here about 20 minutes after capture, once processed. The timeline moves to it automatically.
